The Commons is now running WordPress 3.3, and if you have created a new blog after the upgrade, you may experience some problems embedding video into your posts or a pages. Never fear – there’s a quick fix for this, described below. First, a quick review of how to embed a video in a page or post.
How to Embed a Video
It is an easy, two step process.
- Copy the URL of the video from the host site (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo)
- Paste it into your post on a new line. (Be sure you are in the Visual, rather than the HTML editor.)
You may want to have more control over the height and width of your video. In that case, you can use shortcodes. They need to start on a new line as well.
The Auto-Embeds Checkbox in WP 3.3
In previous versions of WordPress, the “Auto-Embeds” check box was selected by default. Now, in WP3.3, when you create a blog, the default setting for “Auto-Embeds” is unchecked. This causes videos to appear as hyperlinks rather than as embeds. So the quick fix is to go to your Dashboard, click on “Settings>>Media“, and make sure “Auto-Embeds” is checked.
